A female patient at Kwun Tong's United Christan Hospital had suicidal thoughts and lost control. Her hands and feet were tied to the bed to stop her from attempting any harm, however she freed herself and took out an 1 foot long sharp knife from her handbag. As well as holding the knife against herself and threatend to end her life, she also waved the knife at the police, causing the emergency unit in chaos. Fortunatley in the end the police took control and no one was hurt.

Held Knife against her throat and threatened to leave the hospital

The female patient was named Chan, 55 years old. It was found that she had mental disorders in the past and had been living with her family in Sau Mau Ping estate . Sources claimed that yesterday Chan was at home, due to having arguments with her son and daughter. She became emotionally upset and threatened to suicide. Her children became particuarly worried and attempted to calm her down. They took her in a taxi to Kwun Tong's United Christian Hospital for immediate assistance. While going inside the hospital, they approached the police officers and informed them.

Chan who was suspected to be under alot of stress, was immediately taken from the emergency unit and arranged to stay at the examination ward under supervision. The ward staff had to tie her hands and feet with cloth on the bed. During 7.30am yesterday morning, Chan said she was hungry and requested to eat breakfast. The staff nurse released one of the cloths tied to one of hands. Chan also requested to have her belongs returned to her. The nurse didn't expect anything suspicious until Chan took out a 1 foot long sharp knife out of her hangbag. She instantly held it against her own throat and threatened to leave the hospital. The nurse immediately rushed out of the ward to receive help and informed the police.

Afterwards, Chan had cut loose all of the other cloths tied to her body. She then headed towards the emergency unit yelling. Several security and medical staff approached her to calm her down. More than 10 police offices rushed to the scene with protective shields to confront her.

During that time, Chan was out of control and started to wave her knife at the police who approached her. Fortunatley the police used protective shields themselves without getting hurt. Chan who was surrounded by the police, pointed the knife at her abdomen and threatened to kill herself if they did not give way. "Do not approach me or I kill myself." The police feared that she may harm herself therefore they didn't approach her closely. Chan went through the subway tunnel and reached the convenience store area. Afterwards she ran across the H block building of the hospital and sat down on a bench in the park opposite the building. While pointing the sharp knife at her adomen.

The police followed her and found her gradually calming down. During that moment they quickly approached her and grabbed the knife out of her hand, she did not refuse. The police successfully managed to keep her under control and took her back to the hospital for further examinations. She was arrested for carrying offensive weapons in her handbag.

The spokeman of Kwun Tong's United Christian hospital admitted that there was a female patient who was arranged to be observed overnight at the examination ward. Yesterday morning, the patient freed herself from being tied from the bed and threatened to leave the hopsital. The police were informed immediatley to stop her from harming herself and others. Currently her condition is stable and will continue further treatment. No one had been injured during the incident and the emergency unit was not affected. The hospital will do their best to ensure the hospital is safe and that no patients carry offensive items.

People with mental health problem shouldn't be treated in an ordinary ward. This woman should had been transferred to a mental hospital, having proper assessment and treatment. This day and age, people do not treat mental patient with dignity, still tie them up. This treatment is out dated for years. Why wasn't her handbag checked and put to safe keep? There are many issues surrounding the total care of that patient. She may well be mad. But she didn't deserve to be tie up in the bed. Why wasn't she give tranquilizer or more appropriate medical treatment?

The nurse who release Chan should face displinary action for negligence in discharging her duties. She should have kept the patient under restrain and fed the patient herself.

Two are two options to restraining a mad patient who has mental illness. One is to give her some kind of tranquillizer and the other is to tie her up in a bed ... which is exactly what happened in this situation.
