A 23-year-old student from the City University of Hong Kong has been sentenced to seven years in jail after a Shenzhen Intermediate People’s Court found him guilty of smuggling weapons. He was also fined 20,000 yuan (US$2,906), Headline Daily reports. The ruling was handed down in December last year.

The defendant, surnamed Fok, has filed an appeal and is waiting for another hearing. The court heard earlier that Fok was stopped by customs officers when he tried to pass Futian port en route to Shenzhen on July 27 last year. Twelve air guns were found in his backpack. He was arrested on the spot. Fok claimed the guns were given to him by a classmate, surnamed Ho, at the Sheung Shui MTR Station. He said he was told these were electronic parts. Fok said he was promised HK$500 as a reward. Asking the court for leniency, Fok’s lawyer said the records of conversation between Fok and Ho could prove the former was deceived.

Fok’s mother said she believes her son is innocent and will do everything she can to have him exonerated. Fok’s brother said he met with Ho after the incident. Ho said he had no idea that the goods were guns, according to news website Ho did not pay the HK$500 he promised, Fok’s brother said.
