A secondary school student who jaywalked because she didn’t want to be late for an exam was hit by a school bus on Tuesday morning in Quarry Bay. The 13-year-old schoolgirl, surnamed Chan, escaped death but suffered serious injuries as a result, Sing Tao Daily reports.

The accident happened at 7:26 a.m., as she was crossing King’s Road near Westlands Road. Police said the girl, a secondary two student, failed to pay attention to the traffic and, as a consequence, was hit and knocked down by the bus. The 64-year-old bus driver, surnamed Lee, called the police for help.

Paramedics soon arrived at the scene and took her to a nearby hospital, where she was treated for injuries to her head, eyes and limbs as well bone fractures on her nose and shoulders. As she was still conscious, Chan made a call to her mother to tell her what had happened. “I am sorry I got hit by a bus,” she reportedly told her mom, who then rushed to the hospital to see her. Despite her injuries, the girl even requested to leave hospital and go to school because she did not want to miss her exam.

School officials later promised to allow Chan to take a make-up exam after she gets well. The bus driver, who passed an alcohol test after the accident, told the police he did not have enough time to stop the vehicle because it happened so quickly.

Wong Kin-pan, chairman of the Eastern District Council, said the area where the incident happened was not considered a black spot for accidents and jaywalking. The bus, which had a dented front and shattered windshield as a result of the accident, was towed to the Quarry Bay Police Vehicle Pound for further inspection.

This is a parent's nightmare, their child crossing the road and being struck. Sometimes no matter how much coaching you provide, it is not enough to remind a child that crossing when a vehicle is approaching is dangerous.

Hmmm. Shows the stress and pressure that kids face from the fierce competition at school for good grades.

Hopefully the schoolgirl will realize how precious her life is next time she decides to jaywalk crossing the road.
