A taxi plowed into a pedestrian walkway outside the Sogo Department Store in Causeway Bay, knocking down at least nine people “like bowling pins”, according to witnesses. The incident happened on Saturday morning when dozens of shoppers were waiting in line for the store’s half-yearly sale, Apple Daily reports.

The 71-year-old taxi driver, surnamed Lau, told police he swerved to avoid hitting a pedestrian. He was arrested on the strength of evidence from a surveillance camera. His two passengers were unhurt. The impact sent the pedestrians toppling like bowling pins, witnesses said, with an 89-year-old woman falling first after being hit by a younger man. Three others were sent flying toward the windshield. The taxi hit three other unwary pedestrians before coming to a stop.

At least three people were injured and had to be helped to their feet by onlookers. When the driver got off, the first thing he did was to check for damage on the taxi car, according to witnesses, instead of helping his victims. Some with minor injuries left on their own. An ambulance picked up two men and two women. A mother and her six-year-old son checked themselves into a hospital as did a 55-year-old woman.

Three of the injured were discharged after treatment but a 54-year-old man required hospitalization. He is in a stable condition. Lau told police he was forced to make a sharp left turn to avoid hitting a jaywalking pedestrian. However, CCTV footage released by Apple Daily shows no jaywalker, just Lau driving into the crowd. Lau was arrested for dangerous driving causing serious bodily injury. He was granted bail and ordered to report to the police at the end of the month.

I've said it a million times already on this forum. The HK Public Transportation Authority needs to seriously re-evaluate their rules for licensing public transport drivers.

That taxi driver needs to have his head checked before he can be a part of society again.

Reckless driving ... the 71-year-old driver either driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, had some kind of mental illness, or just plain disregarding the safety of other pedestrians in the walkway. :76:

This is pretty bad. The government should have more strict rules for those people. I hope he will no be granted the license.
