A 40-year-old man has been arrested for stealing luggage from airport buses after authorities received reports of several thefts in the past few weeks. A police investigator, posing as a passenger on a KMB Route A41 bus that runs between the Hong Kong airport and Sha Tin, nabbed the culprit Wednesday night, Sing Tao Daily reports.

The man, surnamed Ying, was caught red-handed as he got off at a bus stop with a piece of luggage that belonged to someone else. Investigations revealed that Ying, who is unemployed, was connected to eight other similar bus luggage theft cases that took place in September and October. The total value of the stolen items in the nine cases is estimated to be about HK$174,000. Police officers took Ying to his flat in Mong Kok to search for the loot, but managed to recover only three suitcases and some clothes and shoes. That led them to believe that the suspect had sold the other stolen valuables.

According to Hong Kong Island crime squad inspector Justin Siu Chi-him, police have received multiple reports of theft on airport buses since January this year. Most of the victims were people traveling to the city from the airport. As passengers put their baggage on racks away from their seats, thieves sensed an opportunity. The culprits would get off at bus stops along the route along with stolen luggage while passengers were preoccupied with something, usually their mobile devices, or sleeping. It is said that airport buses A11 and A12, both of which run between the airport and Hong Kong Island, have seen the most luggage thefts.

Earlier this month, two men, aged 60 and 68, were arrested for five similar theft cases. The police have advised people taking airport buses to use chain locks to secure their luggage on racks so as to lower the risk of theft.

Lock them up for months and put their images on the internet.

Passengers never leave their eyes from their luggages.
