A four-month-old baby girl died on board a Cathay Pacific Airways flight from London to Hong Kong over the weekend, leaving the parents inconsolable. According to Apple Daily, a Chinese-French couple took Cathay’s CX256 flight from Heathrow Airport on Sunday along with their infant daughter.

The family was planning to take a transfer flight to Changsha in China’s Hunan province, to visit some relatives, after landing in Hong Kong. The baby’s father was said to be a French national while the mother was Chinese-French.

During the flight from London, the parents asked cabin crew for help after finding the baby unconscious. A passenger, who is a nurse, immediately volunteered to give first aid to the infant. After reporting the incident to the airport control tower in Hong Kong, the chief pilot decided to make an emergency landing at Almaty Airport in Kazakhstan so that the baby can receive emergency medical treatment. However, the baby was confirmed dead by paramedics at the airport. The grieving parents then agreed to continue the trip to Hong Kong with the dead baby.

Apple Daily quoted some passengers on the plane as saying that the couple was emotionally distraught during the rest of the flight. Staff from the Port Health Office and doctors from the Airport Medical Centre boarded the plane as soon as it landed in Hong Kong at 6:39 pm local time Sunday. The officials confirmed that the baby was dead, and found nothing suspicious.

While the cause of death will be determined after forensic autopsy, the baby is said to have suffered from a gastrointestinal disease before taking the flight. She drank milk on board. A doctor was quoted as saying that parents should refrain from taking sick infants on planes as lack of medical support aboard could lead to very dangerous situations.

This is a terrible tragedy but I agree with the above poster, this baby is just way too young to travel. It's immune system is just too weak to fight against anything. On another note, I also believe that children of mixed blood have a higher chance of being born with health problems such as the baby in this story.

This is so sad and tragic. When i read the article I was suprised that the baby was only 4 months old. I would certainly not have taken such a young baby onto a plane especially for a long haul flight. I think that it was certainly not advisable for them to take a baby who was not well. My sympathies go to the parents and I can understand how distraught they were.

the parents should be blamed, 4months old shouldn't take on the flight. bad parents!
