A cashier at a 7-Eleven in Yau Ma Tei is in intensive care after being stabbed by a shoplifter early yesterday evening, local reports say. The victim, a 39-year-old man surnamed Cheng, sustained a four-inch-deep wound to his chest, which was apparently made with a fruit knife. At approximately 6.45pm, a customer entered the convenience store on Pitt Street, reportedly stole a packet of crisps, and ate it on the street.

According to Apple Daily, CCTV footage shows Cheng then getting into a physical confrontation with the customer, who was also brandishing a bottle of beer. RTHK reports that the cashier called the police to report a case of shoplifting prior to his stabbing.

When police arrived at the convenience store, however, they found Cheng lying unconscious on the floor, covered in blood, with a four-inch-deep stab wound to his chest.

Cheng has been admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where he remains in the intensive care unit. Cheng's attacker has been described by police as being of South Asian descent, between the ages of 25 to 35, and wearing jeans, a light-coloured jacket, black and white trainers, and a dark blue baseball cap. Police also say that he was carrying a black backpack and a black messenger bag at the time of the attack. Cheng said that his assailant ran away in the direction of Portland Street, and could also be injured. Police dogs reportedly followed blood traces down Nathan Road, leading officers to find the hilt of a knife around 10 metres away from the scene of the attack. At the time of writing, the blade has not been found.

According to witnesses, a man matching the suspect's description was seen running to a supermarket on Waterloo Road, while police dogs also reportedly found a trail of blood leading to the same supermarket. Police officers from Yau Tsim Mong District are currently searching for Cheng's attacker.

I hope that the police find the criminal as soon as possible. He is a very dangerous person who should be locked away. The photo's, although not complete, suggests that he produced the knife with the intention to use it. It does not appear to show him using the knife to ward off or frighten Cheng so he can run away. It looks like he produced the knife in order to attack him. I cannot believe that anyone would do this over a packet of crisps and its not as if the criminal is a starving beggar who has not eaten for days.

I hope that Cheng makes a speedy recovery.

All this over a  package of crisps, you never know if the assailant was carrying a concealed weapon. You never approach someone suspected of theft unless  you know you are safe from harm. This is a risk not worth taking for money or for crisps. It could be or have been life threatening or life altering.

Sad to hear the the clerk died from his injuries all over a package of crisps. Given his bravery and dedication to 7-11 hope that his family has been adequately compensated for their loss.
