Five youngsters were arrested over the weekend for destroying more than 200 urn graves in Tin Shui Wai in the New Territories. The suspects, with ages ranging from 13 to 20, told police that by desecrating the graves, they wanted to provoke the ghosts and experience spirit possession, which they believe will bring them luck, Apple Daily reports. Some of the bones from the shattered urns were seen scattered around the graves.

Recently, Tin Shui Wan police have received a sharp rise in complaints of desecrated urn graves in the villages of Sha Kong Wai, Ngau Hom Tsuen and San Hing Tsuen.

Many of the damaged urns were repaired while some were buried underground by villagers who said they didn’t want their ancestors to be harassed again. Police noticed a pattern in the cases, which led them to believe that the culprits would strike again. A team was deployed to the hillside of Tin Shui Wai for more than a week, waiting for the tomb raiders.

At 10 p.m. on Saturday, the police saw two 20-year-old men and three teenagers with steel bars heading toward the graves. As the two men, surnamed Lam and Siu, started destroying the urns, the police came out and arrested them. The five suspects said they were trying to make the ghosts angry and prompt them to possess their spirits. Destroying the urns was better than stealing funerary objects from the graves, they added. The two 20-year-old suspects said they were jobless while the other three said they were students. Police didn’t rule out the possibility that the five are tomb raiders who are seeking valuable goods.

A feng shui master told Sing Tao Daily the action taken by the youngsters could prove useless. He said spirit possession usually doesn’t happen to energetic people because ghosts are afraid of positive energy. In October last year, about 10 tombs were damaged in Wong Yi Au in Tai Po with some valuable items burried inside taken. Local residents suspected that someone did it to force them to give up the tomb sites.

Seriously no need for them to get possessed. By their behavior it looks to me they are already possessed to do weird things like these.
