An 83-year-old man died after he was struck by a light rail train at a stop in Lam Tei, Tuen Mun. At 6:39 am on Monday, Ma Chung-hing was crossing the road on foot while holding a bicycle when he was knocked down by the train and go caught underneath it. His wife who is 82, was also struck and thrown to the ground. A motorcyclist said he saw the accident and helped paramedics to take Ma (who was knocked unconscious) to the ambulance. Ma was pronounced dead upon arrival at hospital. His wife suffered multiple bone fractures and had her arms and legs in casts. There are traffic lights at the junction. The 33-year-old train driver surnamed Chu was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving causing the death of another person.

Tuen Mun district councillor To Sheck-yuen said there are seven pedestrian crossings between Lam Tei and Hung Shui Kiu on Castle Peak Road, a distance of about two kilometers. The road design exposes villagers to safety risks, To said. He said this section of light rail should be converted to an elevated railway and light rail staff should help coordinate traffic during rush hours. MTR Corp. Ltd. (00066.HK) said it was saddened by the accident and would provide the necessary assistance to the family of the couple. The light rail driver has been suspended from his duties pending police investigations. Four light rail routes were affected for about an hour. The MTR arranged free shuttle bus services for commuters during the period.

The couple, who had four sons and three daughters, lived in a house in Tsing Chuen Wai village. Ma would take his wife to a Chinese restaurant on Lam Tei Main Street for breakfast every morning after he finished work as a cleaner at a nearby residential complex.

That is sad news to read, they sound like a very loving couple. He takes his wife to breakfast every morning. MTR should do something to increase safety for people.

This is such a tragic accident, I hope that the wife will heal in time. But the train driver should not be allow to work if he was under suspicion of dangerous driving.
