A two-year-old girl had to be sent to hospital after her hand was trapped in a train door at the MTR Station in Shek Kip Mei on Sunday night, Apple Daily reported. The girl surnamed Siu boarded the train on the Kwun Tong line with her parents and relatives. She was being carried by her mother when her left hand got stuck in the door as it closed. The girl cried out loud, apparently from shock and intense pain, prompting other passengers to flock around her. The parents turned panicky as they took turns to hold and comfort their daughter. One passenger sounded the alarm to notify the train operator of the accident. Several passengers tried to pull out Siu’s hand, but it only caused the little girl more pain. By then the train compartment had turned chaotic with some yelling at the parents and other passengers not to move the girl as any action could worsen her situation. One passenger handed out a tube of hand cream to serve as lubricant to free Siu’s hand but it was of no use. Two MTR platform staff arrived at the scene and one of them used a screwdriver to open the train door by force. It took a total of eight minutes for the girl to be rescued. MTR staff inspected the door, which had a few scratches, and decided it would require no immediate repair. The train service resumed right after. The girl was sent to hospital together with her parents to determine if she sustained an injury.

I'm sure that the eight minutes felt longer for the parents. I admit that I do have a fear of have those doors slamming on my ankle/hand or a part of my clothes.

Good thing the baby did not loose any finger and they parents should try to sue the the transit system if possible.

Good thing the baby didn't get her hand or fingers ripped off or anything. Everyone needs to be careful as the train doors close

These sort of things do happen with kids they have a bad habit of grabbing things that they aren't suppose to. I'm just glad that the kid wasn't seriously injured.

You have to wonder about the safety of the trains that something like a baby's hand can get stuck and there is no sensor that seems to pick this up and to alert the driver that something is obstructing the doors. 8 minutes is a long time - you have to wonder what the driver was thinking and doing at the time. From a safety point of view it raises many questions. The article says that alarm was raised. Was there no intercom to speak to the driver and ask him to open the doors? Why did the platform staff have to use a screw driver to open the door by force? Is there no over-ride switch/ button - again what was the driver doing? Was there a driver at all or was it automated?

This poor kid! Just really glad she is OK and that they were able to get her hand out before she lost more blood circulation to that area! What a scary situation!

Parents fault. Why did it take 8 min to free her hand? How long does the rain fr shek kip mei to kowloon tong takes?

Hopefully she doesn't have any serious injuries. This is one reason why your child goes in first or when the doors are about to close you make sure your child is no where near it.

Hopefully the girl is doing fine after this unfortunate incident ... when something like this happens parents should tell their children not to pull out their hand(s) and they also need to call for professional help.
