A 50-year-old tourist from Hong Kong drowned off a beach at the Malaysian resort archipelago of Langkawi while trying to save his two children who fell into the sea, according to Ming Pao Daily, citing local media.

Cheung Ming-tak was walking along a sandbar between Tanjung Rhu Beach and a nearby islet with his son, aged nine, and daughter, 11, at about 4 p.m. Tuesday when the children fell into the water. He dove in to rescue them, assisted by staff from a nearby resort where Cheung and his family were vacationing. While his children were saved, Cheung was swept away by the current. Police organized a rescue team, including three boats and a dozen rescuers, soon after receiving a report about the incident. The operation was forced to be suspended Tuesday night and resumed the next day.

Cheung’s body was found late Wednesday morning 700 meters from the beach. Hong Kong’s Immigration Department said it had contacted Cheung’s family after receiving a request for help. His wife and children were still at Langkawi, dealing with matters related to Cheung’s death.

Foreign Ministry officials in Hong Kong and the Chinese embassy in Malaysia said they will also provide necessary assistance. Lam Chiu-ying, a former director of the Hong Kong Observatory, said Mother Nature is unpredictable. He urged Hongkongers not to walk on any sandbar like the one on Tanjung Rhu Beach. Such sandbars exist at Pak Sha Chau and Sharp Island in Sai Kung.

Just wondering where the family aware they were playing around a dangerous area and that area should have been sectioned off which could have saved a life of a father who died a hero. RIP.
