An engineer admitted in court to helping himself to some HK$500,000 in cash after boxes containing millions of dollars of bills fell off a cash delivery van on Gloucester Road in Wan Chai last Christmas Eve, RTHK reported on Monday.

So Kam-cheung, 46, who pleaded guilty to charges of theft at an Eastern Magistrates’ Court, said he picked up the money after he saw the bills scattered on the street when he got off the bus from a nearby bus stop. So’s lawyer said his client didn’t know if the money was real or not, and just picked up the notes for about two minutes. He only realized they were genuine when he reached home. So bowed and apologized to the court and the cash delivery company. So’s lawyer said his client told the police he was willing to return all the money after he was arrested. So returned HK$500,000 to the police after three days. Saying the chances So would recidivate are slim, the lawyer urged the magistrate to issue a community service order as punishment for his client.

However, Magistrate Jason Wan said a jail term would be a more suitable penalty. He adjourned the case until Aug. 10 to obtain community service and background reports before handing down the sentence.

To be fair I would have picked up the money myself. There are no law that states picking up rubbish from the floor is theft or breaking the law. You drop litter on the floor he was just trying to keep the environment clean :)

If he is going to be charged under some obscure legality, that is not fair. He's returned all the money and community service should be it.

I agree community service should be good enough for punishment. It is hard to not pick up money on the street.

95% of people in the world would've picked up the money if they just see it lying there up for grabs. It's also not his fault that money were flew out of the truck. Just give the guy community service. Pretty impressive that he managed to pick up $500,000 within 2 mins.

Jail time? What's the point. Community service is the way to go. Why? Look at the US. How much money is being spent to feed the prisoners and homeless? Community service helps lowers costs of things. Think about it people!

Anybody would pickup money they found on the street.  Even people who are rich and loaded with cash wouldn't turn their noses at a free meal.
