Netizens are ripping into a grooming competition featuring dyed dogs made to look like exotic animals. The show was organized by Show Time, a Beijing media outlet, and held in Hong Kong’s Nina Tower on Thursday.

Irate netizens from Hong Kong, Taiwan and mainland China accused organizers of animal cruelty, according to Apple Daily. The Hong Kong Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) also condemned the competition and a Taiwanese TV program called it inhumane. A spokesman for Nina Tower said it will screen future events held on its premises while representatives from various pet grooming schools and dye suppliers said the product is safe.

A pet grooming shop in Tsuen Wan came under fire on social media after it posted pictures of its winning entries. They were dyed to look like a tiger and Donald Duck and one was made to resemble a rainbow. Choi Moon-kuen, a representative of dye supplier Wellon Aquarium and Pet Product Co. Ltd., said all of the dyes used on the dogs were imported from Japan and did not contain ammonium, a common coloring agent. A pet grooming shop owner said Hong Kong people are overreacting, adding he has never seen dog injuries or health problems caused by dye.

The SPCA issued a warning against such competitions that go against the principle of making pets clean and comfortable. Before coming to Hong Kong, the contest had been held in Beijing, Xiamen, Wuhan, Guangzhou, Xian and Taiwan.

It's a mixed bag, on the one hand the product is safe on dogs (according to the claims) but on the other hand why??

Would it not be easier to create a stuffed toy animal of various colors?

It looks silly, people just have plenty of time and money to do silly things to their dogs.

This type of dogs competition has gone way too far ... dogs are not stuffed animals ... you can dye your own stuffed animals whatever color you want to ... but when you dye your dog, it is considered animal cruelty.

It looks totally ridiculous and even makes me think about the way people tend to season their food with herbs & sauces. Those dogs look like a piece of sushi wrapped in dried seaweed and covered with soy sauce & mustard.

There's actually a show on American TV for pet grooming and there was a part where they dye their dog in color for a competition... didn't think it was right but if it's safe, what can we say.

Those dogs look ridiculous. Hopefully if they are being dyed they are using safe chemicals.
