The High Court ruled that 18-year-old mentally retarded children have lost their case to extend the school term. The judicial review on the Education policy is not discriminatory. Many mental health officers lose their fight to extend the school year beyond 18.

Tomorrow is the starting of a new school term, about 50 children with disabilities started school one day early under 34 degree high temperature to start the term. The students were having a lesson by famous school teachers such as Seto Wah, Audrey Yu and Claudia Mo, but for some that may be the last lesson, but they hope it will be their first.

Ho Hau Chan, Buddhist Po Kwong School principal told the student during the school opening ceremony said out of 380 student applications, 60 still haven't got a place in school. From September, this 60 of them will have no school to attend to, far from the school's principle that everyone should have a place in school.

Mrs. Chan's son has just turned 18, he stopped going to school earlier on because he had "flu". Everyday, he asks to go to school, and gets very moody and destructive staying at home. He doesn't know he hasn't got a place at school comes September. Mr.s Chan told reporters his son is good in sport and piano, and received many awards. It would be a waste of his talent if he can't continue his education.

"Concerned about the rights and interests of Special Education Parents Alliance" spokesperson Dr Fernando Cheung expressed that he will be having talk with the lawyer in the hope to appeal. Apart from the Hong Kong Pan-democracy camp, the Legislative Council Lam Tai-fa also supports the notion for school placement with government funding to students beyond the age of 18. He is aware that many special need students' family are already facing hardship. The Government should make allowance to help these people.

that's sad...

since they are qualified "mentally retarded", it's obvious that their learning procedure will be retarded 2. therefore, their graduating year should be retarded (as in longer)

The gov't is using whatever excuses but it just comes down to money. Since these people are mentally challenged people, they can't really fight for their rights. But I hope more people will help them fight for their needs.
